Introduction:
I worked with a savvy project manager years ago, who was very adept at recognizing situations which were drifting out of control or felt like they were getting over her head. She would come to me for guidance and had an expression which always gave me a chuckle; "Mike, I think I am flying to close too the sun"
The image of this expression has stuck with me as I have witnessed many people throughout my career burn out from the intensity of the construction industry.
The expression also epitomizes a scenario I often see, where a skilled craftsperson or manager ventures out and establishes their own construction company to quickly realize, they may be over their head. The initial rush of success is invigorating, however the excitement turns into a nagging feeling that they might be flying too close too the sun.
The Scenario:
Your construction business is booming – projects are pouring in, and the cash flow is strong. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, the absence of structured systems and process is starting to cast a shadow over your achievements. Stress, exhaustion, and a constant battle with unexpected challenges have become the new normal.
Longing for Simplicity:
In the midst of this construction frenzy, you yearn for the simplicity of the "good ole days" when your work stayed at the jobsite, and evenings were dedicated to quality time with family. The current chaos has you questioning whether success in the construction industry demands sacrificing your personal life and well-being.
The Internal Struggle:
You carry a sense of pride for what you created. Sweat-equity got you here and feel you must maintain control over all aspects of the business, including areas you may not be as skilled or interested in managing, to ensure success. This consumes your bandwidth and keeps you from focusing on the things you excel at and would be most beneficial to your growing business. Deep down you sense there is a better way, and change is needed to break free of the current cycle.
Making the Commitment:
To break free from this cycle of stress and chaos, it's time to make a crucial commitment – the commitment to finding a strategic partner who understands the intricacies of the construction industry. This partner will not only help you tackle immediate challenges, but will also play a vital role in helping you plan for sustainable growth.
Finding a Construction-Savvy Strategic Partner:
Seek out a partner who has a proven track record in the industry, and not only understands what it means to be a builder, but has the business acumen to implement strategic solutions. The goal is to build a support system that aligns with the specific needs and challenges of your company and help re-focus your efforts and priorities.
Strategizing for Sustainable Growth:
With your partner on board, it's time to strategize for sustainable growth. Implementing streamlined project management systems, processes, and appropriate construction technologies will establish solid foundations for continued growth while avoiding common pitfalls and risks.
Conclusion:
Navigating entrepreneurship in the construction industry requires a unique set of skills and strategic planning. Recognizing the signs of flying too close to the sun, acknowledging the need for change, and making the commitment to a strategic partner, can transform the chaos into a well-oiled machine. By doing so, your company can thrive, ensuring the excitement of the business is sustained without sacrificing the joy of a balanced personal life.
